How to set up your home security system

OK - I admit it - I'm a geek!  An electronics and computer geek to be exact.

As long as I can remember I have been playing around with "electronic toys" of all kinds.  When I was a kid, I would connect light switches to strings and pulleys so that I could have a remote control to turn on or off my bedroom light.  I had always thought that there had to be a better way, but I was younger then.  Once I grew a bit older (I never really "grew up") I finally discovered that products were available at a reasonable price to do exactly what I wanted to do all along. This is now call the Home Automation industry.

Home Automation is basically a fancy phrase for remote control (and computer controlled) lighting.  But there is a bit more to it.  Not only can you control lights by pushing buttons on the wall or a keypad, you can also put almost any number of lights and/or appliances under the control of a timer.  This timer can be just a simple device or it can be "programmed" to have devices turn on or off at various times.  In some cases, I also use infrared (IR) sensors to control various lights and devices throughout my home.

Just to be clear, these infrared sensors are NOT wired to anything.  When someone (or something) walks across their path, they transmit a signal to a receiver.  This receiver then sends a code through my house wiring that either turns something on, or possibly triggers some other event to occur.  For example, I have several wireless security cameras around the outside of the house that switch on or off based on which sensor was activated last.  I even have a sensor on my mailbox flap (in the garage door) that sounds a "chime" when the mail is delivered. It also turns on a small night light so that when I am away from the house, I can look at the light when I get back to see if I need to go get the mail from the garage.  Pretty cool, don't you think?

All of this has been made possible by X10.  Yes, there are others out there that have similar products, but not at the price that X10 has them.  You see, I am also what some people would call "thrifty" (others would say cheap).  Without the affordable priced devices from X10, I would probably have a single camera instead of the many cameras and other home automation devices that I have now.
